The UK Road Trips
01.01.2017
Sure anybody can claim they have the most miles on there car, I have seen Clio's with over 300k. However this Clio's claim is more about the destinations it has travelled more than the miles it has completed. At the time of writing its hit over 200k of miles across the UK and parts of Europe. One of the first Road Trips it did was from Southampton to Loch Ness up in the Scottish highlands overnight.
Miles, Mist, and the Motorway
For over a decade, the Renault Clio Sport 172 "Full Fat" has been far more than a hot hatch; it has been my passport to the furthest reaches of the British Isles. My road trips follow a familiar, addictive rhythm: they are spontaneous endurance tests covering at minimum 500 miles over a packed two-day weekend. Driven by whim, I often head out toward the horizon with my final location completely undecided. I chase the quietest tarmac by setting off in the crisp, early mornings before the world wakes, or under the ink-black skies of late-evening runs.No matter where the compass points, these journeys are a celebration of driving, engineering, and the dramatic, ever-changing British landscape.
The Transit: Cruising the Asphalt Arteries
A 500-mile weekend requires eating up motorway miles efficiently before reaching the wilderness. While many drivers view the motorway network as a chore, the Clio transforms it into an involving prologue. Over the years, a few favourite arteries have stood out:.
- The M40: Serving as the perfect, flowing escape route out of the south, its wide lanes and sweeping elevation changes let the Clio stretch its legs early in the journey.
- The M6 Toll: A blissful, smooth, and traffic-free oasis that bypasses Birmingham's congestion, allowing the high-revving 2.0-litre F4R engine to settle into a steady, uninterrupted rhythm.
- The M74: The ultimate gateway into Scotland. As the lanes open up and the traffic thins, the motorway cuts dramatically through the rolling hills of the Southern Uplands, offering a stunning preview of the scenery to come.
The Spiritual Home: Ullswater and the Lake District
When the urge to escape strikes, my wheels inevitably point north toward Cumbria. By far, most of my road trips have been dedicated to the Lake District, with Ullswater serving as the ultimate destination. The scenery here is nothing short of majestic. Skirting the edge of the lake, the road twists and turns beneath dark, towering fells that drop straight into the glassy, slate-grey water. In the early morning light, a low mist often sits perfectly still over Ullswater, with the only sound being the ticking of a hot exhaust and water gently lapping at the shore. The Clio’s 1,035 kg kerb weight and telepathic steering make it an absolute weapon on these tight, technical roads. Every corner requires precision, and the car reacts instantly to the slightest input, making the journey up from the south worth every single mile..
Into the Wild: Glencoe and the A82
My second most frequented sanctuary lies much further north, deep within the Scottish Highlands. The road trip to Glencoe represents the pinnacle of British driving. The transition from England to the Highlands is defined by iconic A-roads. The A1 and the A30 have each offered long, scenic expanses of cross-country driving on various trips, but nothing on earth compares to the A82.Driving the A82 into Glencoe is a spiritual experience. The road climbs relentlessly through the vast, desolate expanse of Rannoch Moor before plunging into the gorge of Glencoe itself. Here, the scenery shifts into pure, intimidating drama. Towering, snow-capped peaks rise vertically on either side of the asphalt, casting massive shadows across the road.In the freezing winter months, the biting cold air feeds the naturally aspirated engine with dense oxygen, making the throttle response razor-sharp. Navigating the sweeping bends of the A82 with frost on the verges and majestic, snow-peaked mountains filling the windscreen is exactly what this car was built for.
A Machine Built for the Journey
Whether dealing with snowed-out Highland passes, heavy winter mist, or the blistering heat of a summer coastal run, the Clio Sport has never faltered. The supportive, half-leather sports seats keep fatigue at bay over 250-mile stints, while the close-ratio gearbox turns overtaking slow-moving holiday traffic on single-carriageway A-roads into an effortless, second-nature task.Every 500-mile loop leaves a lasting memory—not just of the incredible destinations like Ullswater and Glencoe, but of the solo miles spent in the cockpit, watching the sun rise or set over the open road.
